COVID-19 death count in PH reaches 28,427 with 196 more deaths

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s total death count for COVID-19 further increased to 28,427 on Thursday as the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the death of 196 more individuals.

There are now 1,627,816 total confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, of which 1.75 percent have led to fatalities. Some 66,895 patients or 4.1 percent of the tally remain as active cases, while 1.5 million or 94.1 percent have already recovered.

According to the DOH Epidemiology Bureau, deaths triggered by COVID-19 are declining at a national level.

Data from the DOH unit showed that an average of 133 patients died per day in April this year when the country saw a surge in infections. This figure then decreased to 117 deaths daily in May, 95 in June, and 61 in July.

The World Health Organization earlier cited the Philippines for keeping COVID-19 deaths at only over one percent of the total confirmed cases.

Of the active cases in the country, 94.6 percent are mild, 1 percent are asymptomatic, and 1.30 percent are moderate. Meanwhile, 1.9 percent are severe and 1.1 percent are critical cases that are at higher risk for death.

The enhanced community quarantine, the strictest lockdown, will be imposed in Metro Manila starting Friday, August 6, until August 20 to impede a spike in cases due to the highly transmissible Delta variant and eventually prevent more deaths due to a rise in infections.
