P10-M worth of illegally imported red onions from China seized
MANILA, Philippines — Illegally imported red onions from China amounting to P10 million have been seized in Manila, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) reported Tuesday.
The BOC-Manila International Container Port (MICP) said the two containers of red onions were seized on July 17 following an alert order issued by District Collector Romeo Rosales.
The BOC said the containers were consigned to Flevo Trading and were misdeclared as white onions from China.
A warrant of seizure and detention was immediately issued against the subject shipment, the BOC said.
Rosales underscored that MICP shall ensure that proper declaration is done and necessary permits must be secured to properly import those of goods which are regulated in nature.
“Smuggling of red onions has been greatly affecting local industries,” Rosales said in a statement. — Faith Yuen Wei Ragasa, Inquirer trainee
