MANILA, Philippines — Flooding may take place in some areas of Metro Manila and Central Luzon as moderate to heavy rains are expected to fall in those places due to the monsoon trough, according to a rainfall advisory issued at 11 p.m. on Wednesday by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Specifically, moderate rains may occur over Pampanga and Bulacan, while moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds are expected over Metro Manila and Bulacan in the next two hours.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains may be felt in Zambales and Bataan.

Pagasa’s flood forecasting division also warned that the following watercourses in Metro Manila and its adjacent areas would be affected by the rainfall:

Main Stream

  • Upper Marikina River (Rodriguez, Antipolo, San Mateo, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig)
    tributaries
  • Mango River (Rodriguez)
  • Nangka River (Marikina, San Mateo, Antipolo)

“People living near the mountain slopes and in the low-lying areas of the abovementioned cities and the local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to be alert for possible flash floods and landslides,” Pagasa said.

“Local flooding is possible in some areas due to poor drainage system and impounding water,” it added.

A 10 p.m. thunderstorm advisory also warned residents in Catanduanes, Oriental Mindoro, and Romblon towns of Banton, Corcuera, about the possibility of moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds in the next two hours.

“All are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts associated with these hazards which include flash floods and landslides.  Keep monitoring for updates,” Pagasa said.

In an earlier weather report, Pagasa said that Luzon and the Visayas, especially the western portions, would have cloudy skies and rains due to the prevalence of the southwest monsoon and the monsoon trough.
