Rainy Monday in parts of Mindanao as ‘Dante’ intensifies into tropical storm

Press Briefing: Tropical Storm "#DantePH" Monday, 5 AM May 31, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Light to heavy rains will prevail in the Caraga, Davao and Soccsksargen regions, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental on Monday due to the outer rainbands of Tropical Storm Dante, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its tropical cyclone bulletin.

“Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels,” Pagasa said.

The center of the tropical storm was last located 625 kilometers east of Davao City, according to the state weather bureau.

It is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts up to 80 kph, and is moving north-northwest at 15 kph.

“The present track forecast shows that the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) over any land area in the country remains less likely,” Pagasa said.

“However, given the uncertainty in its track forecast, any further westward shift in the track forecast or expansion in its wind radius may lead to the hoisting of TCWS over the eastern portion of the country,” it added.

Pagasa said “Dante” will likely remain over the Philippine Sea throughout its forecast period. The tropical storm is also expected to continue moving northwest over the next three days.

It is forecast to turn north on Thursday and northeast on Friday, according to the weather bureau.

“’Dante’ is forecast to gradually intensify in the next two days before weakening throughout the remainder of the forecast period,” Pagasa noted.
