1 killed, 1 hurt in Cebu City construction mishap

CEBU CITY—A construction worker died while another was hurt on Saturday, May 22, when a portion of a construction site they were working in collapsed in Barangay Apas in Cebu City.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated by local authorities, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

The command center learned of the accident at 11:43 a.m.

Rescue groups then went to the construction site of Mivela Garden Residences of Cebu Landmasters. The construction was undertaken by PLD Construction.

About 30 minutes later, the workers were dug out, said CDRRMO chief for administration Ramil Ayuman in a statement.

The fatality was identified by the CDRRMO as Romeo Waniwan, 24, of Sitio Alaska, Barangay Mambaling in Cebu City.

Wounded was Abel Bautista, 41 who suffered a swollen left forearm and a wound on the left knee.

Ayuman added that the Office of the Building Official ordered a work suspension at the construction site pending inspection and investigation of the tragedy.

There were no other reported missing persons from the collapse portion of the construction site.

In a statement, PLD Construction said it has started an investigation and will fully cooperate with the Office of the Building Official (OBO).

“Our priority now is to extend our full assistance to our workers – one casualty and another one injured, and their families. Cebu Landmasters Inc., our developer, also pledges to provide additional support, and has required us to fully comply with the necessary measures,” PLD Construction said in a statement.
