Bangsamoro grand mufti declares Eid’l Fitr falls on May 13

COTABATO CITY—The grand mufti of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Abu Huraira Udasan, has officially declared that Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, will be on Thursday, May 13.

“By virtue of the authority vested in me as Bangsamoro Mufti, I hereby announce that Eid’l Fitr prayer will be on Thursday, May 13,” Udasan announced on social media on Tuesday (May 11) evening.

Eid’l Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwaal, or the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.

After its meeting on May 10, the Bangsamoro Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19 empowered the provincial IATFs to enact their own policy on the conduct of Eid’l Fitr congregational prayer and other gatherings, upon consultation with religious leaders.

The city government of Cotabato said on Tuesday that the city IATF has advised the public against holding congregational prayers.

Despite being on modified general community quarantine status, the city government said it cannot guarantee that the limit on venues to 30 percent capacity could be implemented during gatherings for Eid’l Fitr.

The city government instead urged Muslims to say Eid prayers at home to prevent virus transmission.
