MANILA, Philippines — The death of a 31-year-old noncommissioned officer assigned to the Central Luzon Police Regional Office pushed to 57 the COVID-19 toll of the Philippine National Police on Tuesday.

The officer was male, according to Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the PNP deputy chief for administration.

Earlier, the PNP recorded 110 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the active infection count 1,641.

The country is still dealing with the effects of a COVID-19 surge in Metro Manila and four adjacent provinces.  Earlier, the Department of Health recorded 5,683 new COVID-19 cases nationwide — fewer than the 10,000 to 12,000 cases recorded at peak points of the surge.

However, the low active case count may be due to the fact that 21 laboratories, as the DOH admitted, were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS), despite all labs being operational on May 2.

All in all, the country had 1,067,892 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday.
