Talisay City barangays under calamity status

FIVE barangays in Talisay City, southern Cebu will be placed under calamity status to facilitate the allocation of financial assistance to families affected by floods last Dec. 27.

Barangays Dumlog, Poblacion, San Roque, Cansojong and Lawaan I were hit by floods caused by the southeast monsoon.

At least 1,000 families were displaced during the incident after the water level rose in Mananga River.

Based on records of the Talisay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, about 1,907 families and 9,233 persons were affected by the flood.

Talisay City Councilor Celiapo Cabuenas, who heads the committee on social welfare and services, pushed for the declaration of calamity status on the five barangays.

The Talisay City Council will deliberate in its session tomorrow a resolution that will authorize Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez to allocate P350,000 from the city’s calamity fund for the families. Correspondent Carmel Loise Matus
