Valenzuela mayor says he might run for Congress in 2022 polls
MANILA, Philippines — Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian on Wednesday said he might run as Valenzuela representative in the elections next year but stressed that he will prioritize the efforts to curb coronavirus disease pandemic in the city.
“I don’t want to be coy about it, but to be honest all my thoughts are only for this Covid-19 plans or Covid response. Haven’t really thought about politics pero [but] definitely, staying in the local realm, I’m probably going back to Congress probably,” Gatchalian said over Kapihan sa Manila Bay when sought for comment about his political plans in 2022.
“I have more things to do in this city, not as their local chief executive, but maybe as their congressional representative, which I used to be for the 1st district,” he added.
In the 2007 polls, Gatchalian was elected as representative of the 1st District of Valenzuela City. He was again re-elected as Valenzuela 1st representative in 2010.
In 2019, Gatchalian won his third term as local chief executive of the city.
