MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday urged Filipinos to follow health protocols to avoid a possible surge of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases after the holiday season.

“Christmas time is about a few days from now. Sundin lang natin iyong culture but—remember the word but— but there are rules to be followed at this time of our national life,” Duterte said in a taped speech.

Later in his speech, the President urged the people to avoid partying during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“Make it a sacrifice. It’s the only Pasko na sinabi ko sa inyo magtulungan tayo so everybody will be safe, healthy, and alive,” he said.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the public should refrain from using torotot or horns which are typically used to welcome the New Year, saying it may cause the coronavirus to spread.

Duque also urged people to avoid gatherings and observe health protocols such as wearing face masks, face shields, and observing physical distancing.

The Department of Health earlier said it is preparing a contingency plan for the possible surge in coronavirus infections as Filipinos celebrate the Christmas season.

As of Wednesday, there are 452,988 confirmed COVID-19 cases nationwide, including 419,282 recoveries and 8,833 deaths.
