Cops eye politics as possible motive in Los Baños mayor slay

MANILA, Philippines — Police on Tuesday said they are considering politics as one of the motives in the Dec. 3 murder of Los Baños Mayor Caesar Perez.

“Iyon ang mga angle na sinasabi natin, that is a possible motive. That is one. But hindi pa tayo sigurado until now. But on the course of our investigation, isa iyan sa tintignan natin iyong politika,” Calabarzon police director Brigadier General Felipe Natividad Jr.  said in a press briefing at Camp Crame when asked if they are also looking into politics as motive behind the mayor’s death.

(That is one of the angles, that is a possible motive. But we are still not sure. But in the course of our investigation, politics is one of the angles that we are looking into.)

Natividad also said they are interviewing family members to help in their investigation.

“Members ng family nakausap na natin, pati nung nabubuhay si mayor [Perez], may nababanggit siya sa atin. May mga tao tayong naiimbestigahan. It is part of the investigation plan,” he said.

(Members of the family are being interviewed and even back when Perez was still alive, he named some people. We are investigating some people. It is part of the investigation plan.)

Perez, who was included in the government’s narcolist, was shot twice in the head inside the municipal hall at 8:45 p.m. last Thursday, (Dec. 3) night.

In a televised briefing on Monday night, President Rodrigo Duterte distanced himself from Perez’s slay. He also disowned the narcolist that included Perez’s name.
