Ulysses intensifies as it makes landfall over Quezon province

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Ulysses, internationally known as Vamco, made landfall at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday over Patnanungan, an island town in Quezon province, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
It then made a second landfall at 11:20 p.m. over Burdeos, a coastal town on Polillo Island in Quezon.
Instead of weakening on its first landfall, Ulysses grew even stronger with maximum sustained winds of 150 kph at the center and a gustiness reaching up to 205 kph.
Earlier, its maximum sustained winds near the center was 140 kph with a gustiness reaching up to 195 kph.
It was last located at 70 km east of Infanta, Quezon, moving west-northwest at 15 kph.
It was expected to move over to the northern portion of mainland Quezon between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Ulysses veered north from its earlier projected track. It may move over Central Luzon by early Thursday morning, rather than directly hovering above Metro Manila after hitting Quezon province.
Its big diameter, however, would still bring strong winds and rains over Metro Manila.
It is expected to emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Thursday morning.
The following areas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, where wind speeds may range from 121 kph to 170 kph:

Warning signals in areas not mentioned had been now taken down with Ulysses moving farther away from the Visayas.
Pagasa said that areas under Signal No. 3 could sustain heavy damage, especially high-risk structures, such as old and dilapidated houses and those made of light materials.
Destructive typhoon-force winds may affect areas under Signal No. 3, while gale to storm-force winds will prevail in areas under Signal No. 2.
Until Thursday noon, heavy to intense and at times torrential rains will fall over Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and the eastern portion of Isabela.
At the same time, moderate to heavy and at times intense rains will fall over the Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of mainland Cagayan Valley, Pangasinan, Marinduque, the northern portion of Mindoro Provinces including Lubang Island, Albay, Catanduanes, and Burias Island.
Pagasa added that areas in the path of the typhoon could also have widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.
