Aquino ‘ not worthy’ to be president, faces ouster—Butuan bishop

MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III is “not worthy” to lead the country and groups are “preparing” for his ouster, a Catholic bishop on Thursday said.

In a radio interview, Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos scored Aquino for appointing his friends and “shooting buddies” to government positions, adding that that there was a “huge” possibility he would be ousted.

A transcript of the interview, aired early Thursday morning, was sent to reporters covering the Church beat.

“He is not really worthy to be a President. That job is not for him. The earlier he will be out of his post, will better for the Philippines,” Pueblos said.

When asked if he thought Mr. Aquino would eventually be ousted, the bishop said: “That’s a huge possibility but we have to follow (a) certain process.”

“There are groups that are actually preparing for his ouster from his post,” Pueblos said.

The Catholic Church and Aquino have been at loggerheads over his decision to support the passage of the controversial reproductive health bill.

The bishops claim that the bill’s passage will lead to immorality and the use of abortifacient contraceptives despite the constitutional ban against abortion.

On the other hand, Pueblos is perceived by many as close to former President now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whom the Aquino administration wants to bring to justice for her alleged crimes during her watch.
