DA: Rolly, Quinta agricultural damage hit P4.56B

MANILA, Philippines — Super Typhoon Rolly and Typhoon Quinta left P4.56 billion worth of destroyed crops, the Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

In a report, DA said the two weather disturbances affected 77,958 farmers and 115,148 agricultural areas in Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), the Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

The typhoons likewise brought a production loss of 262,539 metric tons, the DA added.

For Quinta, the DA said the total amount of damage and losses was pegged at P2.56 billion from the previously reported P2.2 billion, affecting 47,864 farmers and fisherfolk.

The typhoon made landfall in Albay twice, then barreled through Quezon, Marinduque, and Oriental Mindoro, from October 25 to 26.

Meanwhile, around P2 billion worth of agricultural goods were damaged by Rolly, up from the previously reported P1.75 billion, affecting 30,094 farmers.

The DA said the typhoon caused a production loss of 116,962 metric tons.

Rolly, which is considered the world’s strongest tropical cyclone for 2020 yet, ravaged several provinces in the Bicol region and Calabarzon last Sunday, Nov. 1.
