Two men killed in Laguna shootout

CAMP PACIANO RIZAL, Laguna—Two unidentified men were killed in a shootout with police in Bińan City, Laguna before dawn on Friday.

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. after the two men on board a motorcycle sped through a checkpoint set up by the police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) along the national highway in Barangay (village) Halang of Bińan, said Senior Supt. Arnel Escobal, HPG chief in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon).

Escobal said the police were chasing the motorcycle and had reached the adjoining village of San Agustine Village, Barangay Francisco, Biñan, Laguna when the suspects fired the first shot, hitting the patrol car.

The men died of several gunshots when the police fired back, according to Escobal.

He said the police recovered two .38 cal guns from the suspects.

Authorities were now checking if the vehicle was stolen as it did not have a licensed plate.
