MANILA, Philippines — Calls for the establishment of a revolutionary government is “incomprehensible,” Malacañang said Wednesday, adding it is “strange” that President Rodrigo Duterte’s supporters themselves are the ones pushing for it.
“In fairness, I don’t know what they want. They claim to be supporters of the President so why would they want to unseat a constitutional president, so I find it strange,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview over CNN Philippines.
“The whole exercise to me is incomprehensible,” he went on.
Roque has repeatedly said that the President sees no need for a revolutionary government and that the administration’s focus is on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The Palace official also made it clear that the President is only open to public discourse with sectors who believe that a revolutionary government can address their grievances.
Duterte himself thumbed down the supposed clamors of his supporters to establish a revolutionary government where he will also be designated as the leader.
A group called Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte-National Executive Coordinating Committee (MRRD-NECC) launched the movement in support of a revolutionary government led by the Duterte administration, believing that this could fast track the government’s shift to federalism.
