Typhoon victims in Negros to rebuild damaged homes

More than 7,000 families in Negros Oriental will soon start building their core shelters and buying construction materials to re-build their homes that were damaged by the flashfloods.

Regional Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) announced the availability of the P92-million allocation for the flood victims in the province whose houses were totally or partially damaged by typhoon Sendong.

Macapobre and the municipalities of Bacong, Amlan, Mabinay, Pamplona, San Jose, Sibulan, Siaton, Valencia and the cities of Tanjay and Dumaguete are working for the transfer of funds.

The 1,398 families who totally lost their homes will receive P70,000 each for the construction of their core shelters, while the remaining 6,356 families will each be given emergency shelter assistance of P5,000 for the purchase of construction materials to repair their homes.

The Dumaguete City government is considering leasing lots to accommodate core shelters for the displaced families.

At present, more than 400 families are still staying in the evacuation centers in Dumaguete, Valencia and Sibulan.

They were served with hot meals, relief goods, noche buena packages last Christmas and New Year.
