MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday congratulated former Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle for his promotion as cardinal-bishop.
“Kami po ay binabati ang ating His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle sa kanyang pagkakatalaga bilang isang Cardinal Bishop,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in an online briefing.
(We congratulate His Eminence Cardinal Tagle for his promotion as Cardinal-Bishop.)
“Ang tagumpay niya po, your Eminence, ay tagumpay ng buong sambayanang Pilipino. Maraming salamat po sa karangalan and congratulations,” he added.
(Your success, your Eminence, is the success of the Filipino people. Thank you for bringing honor, and congratulations.)
Tagle’s promotion means he would belong to a circle of 11 cardinal-bishops who are “consulted by the Pope,” said Fr. Gregory Gaston, rector of the Pontificio Collegio Filippino.
Prior to his promotion as a cardinal-bishop, Tagle was appointed as prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (CEP).
