MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday appealed to the public to coordinate with local government units (LGUs) if they plan to distribute relief goods to ensure the observance of physical distancing.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque issued the reminder after former senator Jinggoy Estrada was “arrested” for allegedly violating quarantine rules when he distributed milkfish in San Juan City.
“Nakikiusap po kami doon sa nais magkawanggawa, makipag-coordinate po tayo sa LGUs para doon po ng ayuda sa ating mga kababayan,” Roque said in an online press conference.
(We are asking those who are volunteering to coordinate with the LGUs when distributing donations to our countrymen.)
“Kailangan naman po magkaroon ng safeguards nang hindi po magkumpol-kumpulan at dagsain kayo ng mga taumbayan. Kinakailangan magkaroon ng mga hakbang para masigurado ang social distancing habang namimigay ng ayuda,” he reminded.
(There should be safeguards so that the public will not crowd. There should be steps to ensure social distancing while the distribution of aid is being done.)
Asked about the incident involving the former senator, Roque said he’s leaving it up to the San Juan City local government to enforce quarantine rules.
Roque added he received information that the PNP has given a stern warning to former senator Estrada.
Estrada on Sunday was brought to the police for supposedly violating quarantine guidelines in San Juan City.
The former senator denied violating any quarantine measure and claimed there was politics involved in the incident.
San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said there was no politics involved in Estrada’s arrest. He said the former senator was not a “person authorized outside of his residence.”
