Old woman sleeping on street in Manila nabbed for curfew violation

MANILA, Philippines — A woman sleeping along a sidewalk was arrested in Manila on Monday evening for allegedly violating the city’s curfew and resisting authorities, Manila Police District (MPD) said Tuesday.

A report from MPD’s Malate police station said the woman, 69 years old, was found along Leveriza Street in Malate.

A report showed that barangay officials were conducting inspections to check residents’ compliance with Manila’s curfew along Leveriza Street at 8:30 p.m. when they found the old woman sleeping.

Barangay officers alerted the woman who then shouted back at the former. This prompted the local government officers to warn the street dweller but the latter continued to shout.

Barangay officials then arrested the woman and brought her to Malate police station for detention and filing of appropriate charges.

Charges of breach of peace, Article 151 of Revised Penal Code or Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority and Oral Defamation were being readied against Espejo.

Over the weekend, the Manila government signed an ordinance on imposing a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the city to contain the further spread of COVID-19.
