After tenants of an apartment building in India found a mixture of beer, brandy and rum running through their faucets, authorities rushed to find the source of the mix-up.

Residents in Kerala asked the authorities for help with regard to the peculiar incident on Feb. 3. Upon further inspection, the local officials discovered that the water well had been contaminated with booze, BBC reported last Thursday, Feb. 6.

Authorities buried 6,000 liters of confiscated alcohol, which has been seized on court orders, in a pit near a water well. The alcohol apparently seeped through the soil and contaminated the well which supplied the 18 apartments in the building.

Now the residents are complaining about the inconvenience that the alcohol contamination brought. Joshy Malyiekkal, the owner of the apartment complex, told the local arm of the British news outlet that the families occupying the apartments had no drinking water. He also said they had no clean water to wash themselves.

“The children couldn’t go to school and even their parents couldn’t go to work,” Malyiekkal was quoted as saying.

Pumping the well clean would take months to finish, as per the report. The residents are relying on local authorities to supply them with clean water every day, but they said it was not enough.
