Compostela town to receive new landfill this month
With its tight fiscal situation, Compostela town in Cebu will soon have its own sanitary landfill this month.
Caretaker Mayor Pedro Noval and 17 barangay captains of Compostela town met with Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale to discuss the landfill project with a representative from a garbage-hauling company.
Mabuhay Cebu Garbage Management Inc. will deliver the town’s garbage to a new landfill between barangays Cambayog and Cogon. Construction of the landfill is expected to be completed within the month.
In the meantime, the town will continue to dispose of its garbage in the Consolacion dumpsite.
Bernadette Nielo, Mabuhay Cebu Garbage Management Inc. representative, said they will lower their fee from P700 to P200 per metric ton of garbage to Compostela.
Compostela town is operating on a reenacted budget following an election dispute between former mayor Ritchie Wagas and Mayor-elect Joel Quiño that resulted in the vacancies of the mayor’s office and the municipal council.
Mabuhay operates a landfill in Consolacion town and charges its municipal government P700 in tipping fee per metric ton of garbage.
Compostela’s old dumpsite in barangay Cambayog was shut down after it was ordered closed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas (DENR-7).
During the meeting, Garcia encouraged the barangay officials to avail of the Capitol’s Disposal of Garbage and Waste Enforcement for Nature (D-GWEN) program, which allots P50,000 for the operation of a material recovery facility (MRF).
She said the province will extend its assistance to Compostela in repairing the Guimbal-Dap-dap provincial road, the town’s water system, the Basak Elementary School and the rip-rapping of the barangay Cot-cot river. Correspondent Carmel Loise Matus
