Tagle underscores devotion, mission, and gift

MANILA, Philippines — On the Feast of Black Nazarene, His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle urged Filipinos to utilize “gifts” as devoted servants to fulfill the Lord’s mission.

This was Tagle’s message before thousands of devotees in Quirino Grandstand in Manila during a Holy Mass early Thursday morning, hours before the annual procession of the Black Nazarene or Traslacion.

The mass was led by Tagle as homilist and Rev. Msgr. Hernando Coronel as main presider.

In his homily, Tagle delved into the religious event’s theme this year: “Iba’t-ibang Kaloob, Isang Debosyon, Tungo sa isang Misyon” (Different Gifts, One Devotion, Towards One Mission).

Devotion vs Obligation

Tagle posed a question to students in the crowd: “Nag-aaral ba kayo? Ano ‘yun obligasyon o debosyon? Sana debosyon.”

(Are you studying? Is this an obligation or devotion? I hope it is devotion.)

Tagle likened devotion to loyalty and making a vow.

(People who act because of obligation often resent it, have a heavy heart. They will drag their feet to do things.)

Jesus Christ’s sacrifice was not simply about death. Tagle said it was a result of his devotion, and not obligation.

Our mission? Spread love

When Jesus Christ died on the cross, Tagle said it did not signify failure but rather an achievement of mission which was to save mankind through love–a mission that was rooted from devotion.

This mission, Tagle said, should be followed by the faithful.

Utilize gifts

In accomplishing the mission, Tagle said that the faithful should utilize their “gifts.”

For instance, the gift of being good with words. Tagle said this should not be used to manipulate people and twist the truth.

Tagle reminded the devotees of the connection of the three–devotion, mission, and gift.
