Thousands in Mimaropa evacuate, brownout in Romblon as ‘Tisoy’ passes

SAN PEDRO CITY –– The number of evacuees in the Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan (MIMAROPA) region grew quickly from hundreds to thousands of families, as Typhoon “Tisoy” brings strong winds and heavy rains.

A report from the regional Office of the Civil Defense as of 2 a.m. Tuesday, said 4,434 families (18,446 people) were seeking shelter in evacuation centers.

Oriental Mindoro province had the most number of evacuees at 2,218 families (9,307 people).

In Banton island, Romblon, power was cut since Monday midnight as strong winds and heavy downpour battered the island.

In Romblon, 937 families (4,006 persons) had evacuated; 865 families (3,511 persons) in Marinduque; and 414 families (1,622 persons) in Occidental Mindoro.

Classes and boat trips in the region remained suspended.
