Cagayan barangay chief shot dead in scuffle

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines — A barangay chairman was shot dead in a scuffle with three men on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Allacapan town here in Cagayan.

Mariano Tabanda, chair of Barangay Bulo, was killed after he confronted the Trinidad family for fishing with an electrified rod.

Armed with a handgun, Tabanda supposedly shot their companion, Rocky Costales, by accident.

Virgilio Trinidad Sr. and his sons Edison and Virgilio Jr. quickly grappled for the weapon. Edison managed to wrest away Tabanda’s gun and shot the Bulo official six times, according to Cpl. Ariel Beltran, Allacapan police investigator.
