NBP under red alert status amid demolition of illegal shanties

MANILA, Philippines — The New Bilibid Prison has been placed under “red alert” status as prison officials start destroying illegal structures supposedly used by prisoners for unlawful activities, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said Thursday.

“We are on red alert since the start of the demolition operation. As regards what has been reported in the news today, we have intel report of resistance, as a security measure media personalities were only allowed at the view deck for the meantime,” BuCor spokesperson Wena Fe Dalagan told reporters in a Viber message.

Dalagan, however, assured the public that “no incident of any occurrence [had been] reported.”

Last week, law enforcement agencies helped in the demolition of illegal structures in the national penitentiary after discovering that prisoners hide contraband, including illegal drugs, and use cellphones inside the unauthorized shanties. /jpv
