BuCor releases 35 more surrenderers

MANILA, Philippines-The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has confirmed the release of the third batch of surrenderers, Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete said Monday.

Perete said BuCor recently released 35 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who surrendered in compliance with President Rodrigo Duterte’s call.

Early this month, Duterte called on the PDL’s on BuCor’s list who were prematurely released due to GCTA to surrender or be arrested without warrant. Over 2,000 have complied. However, even those who were released because of acquittal, granted parole and conditional pardon were erroneously included on the list and have complied with the President’s call.

The DOJ said the PDLs who were not supposed to be on the list but surrendered would be the first to be released.

The first batch of surrenderers or 52 PDL’s was released over the weekend. The recently released PDL surrenderers are 35 bringing the total to 87.

Perete said there were 27 other PDLs whose records were still being reviewed by the Oversight Committee.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra meanwhile said they were verifying reports that a large number of PDLs surrenderers at the Davao Penal Colony (DAPECOL) have been released./ac
