Deaf personalities everyone should know about

[This is the third in a series of INQUIRER.net’s special reports on the Philippine Deaf community and Filipino Sign Language.]

A myth about the Deaf is that they are “mute” — Deaf people have voice boxes, and they have also been speaking up for their inclusion here and abroad.

We asked Deaf persons about Deaf people whom they admire and inspire them. Here is our video report, featuring the students, faculty and researchers of the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde:

They told us about a variety of personalities, ranging from a college professor to an American celebrity, all of whom have made themselves seen and heard with regard to the representation of Deaf people.

These personalities prove that the Deaf have so much to contribute, and that the barrier they face is not being deaf but a world that needs to listen more. JB
