Woman inserts spring in vagina as birth control, still gets pregnant

/ 08:09 PM September 17, 2019

A woman in China, who is also a mother of three, inserted a metal spring inside her vagina about half a year ago, believing it would act as a birth control device. The object did not yield the desired effect because the unnamed 31-year-old had still gotten pregnant.

She hoped the spring, which measured 2 inches across, would have served as an intrauterine device (IUD), as per Daily Star last Thursday, Sept. 12.

An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device inserted into a woman’s uterus. It releases copper which prevents the woman from becoming pregnant, as per the United Kingdom National Health Service.

Doctors later discovered the object inside the woman when she went to the Minzhong Hospital in Zhongshan, to have the baby aborted. According to gynecologist Fu Junhong, the woman was already five months pregnant when she requested an abortion.

“During our checks, we found rings lodged between her vagina and cervix,” Junhong was quoted as saying. “It was a spring which had already been enveloped by her vaginal tissue.”

To remove the object, surgeons had to use a pair of pliers to cut the metal coil into seven parts, as per report. It was later removed from the woman’s body piece by piece, after a procedure that lasted for 40 minutes.

Junhong explained that the woman had found the metal spring on the floor of her workshop. She then “picked it up, gave it a wash and then inserted it.”

“She did by herself about half a year ago,” Junhong added. “It was greatly unscientific, and very unhygienic.”

The woman did not sustain any infections or tissue damage after the operation, and was released from the hospital. It is not stated in the report whether the abortion was carried out. Ryan Arcadio/JB
