/ 05:06 AM September 12, 2019

Today, Sept. 12, is the 106th birth anniversary of National Artist for Cinema Gerardo “Gerry” de Leon.

In high school, De Leon played the piano to accompany the silent films that were being shown at Cine Moderno in Quiapo.

Despite finishing medicine, the lure of the cinema was stronger.

He made his directorial debut with “Ama’t Anak” and his biggest prewar hit was “Ang Maestra.”

His other known films included “Daigdig ng mga Api,” “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.”

He died on July 25, 1981 and was named a National Artist the following year. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
