Go hits Lagman for questioning Malasakit Centers: ‘Your image is beyond repair’

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go did not mince words when he chided Albay 5th District Rep. Edcel Lagman for criticizing Malasakit Centers.

In last week’s House hearing on the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s (PCSO) 2020 budget, Lagman asked the agency for its legal basis in funding Malasakit Centers, which he described as a “partisan tool rather than a medical outlet.”

Wala rin pong legal basis ang pagtulong sa pag-repair ng inyong mukha,” Go said during his privilege speech on Tuesday.

Go stressed that Malasakit Centers aim to serve as a “one-stop shop” for the medical concerns of Filipinos.

Go’s tirades against Lagman did not stop there as he accused the lawmaker of not being aware of the Filipino’s current problems.

The senator also noted that it was Lagman’s province who first benefited from the government’s medical program.

“Congressman Lagman, do not be anti-poor.

The senator also said the program was designed to provide streamlined and expedited delivery of medical services to Filipinos.

“Hindi yan logong politiko. Walang logo ni Bong Go. It is one of the solutions of the Duterte administration to provide quick and quality access to healthcare to all Filipinos, regardless of their age, sex, ethnic background, religion—and let me emphasize this—regardless of their political affiliation,” he said.

But Senator Risa Hontiveros came to the defense of Lagman.

“In the spirit of inter parliamentary courtesy, please allow me just to make a few points about Rep. Edcel Lagman. We may agree or disagree with the points that he makes, pero siguro naman tulad ng bawat  isa sa atin sa Senado naga-aral naman siya bago siya magsalita though we may agree or disagree with what he says,” Hontiveros said.

“In the same way we may agree or disagree with what Representative Lagman says pero hindi naman siguro siya anti-poor at tulad din ng bawat isa sa atin sa Senado ay pro-poor din po siya,” she added.

This as she noted that she was able to work with Lagman in several legislative efforts in Congress.

“I make these points not only out of inter parliamentary courtesy but also out of pag-recollect na nakasama korin po si Rep. Lagman sa ilan sa mga importanteng legislative efforts ng Kongreso,” she said.
