8 dead, 25 hurt as truck falls off hill in Camarines Sur

PILI, Camarines Sur, Philippines — Eight people died and 25 others were injured after the truck they were riding fell off a hill Saturday afternoon in San Fernando town in Camarines Sur province, police said.

According to police, a Foton truck, which had over 70 passengers, was being driven by Mario Jacob. The truck lost its brakes while going downhill on road in Barangay Tagpucol at around 4 p.m., causing Jacob to lose control. The truck fell off the hill and crashed into a tree.

Eight people died on the spot.

The injured passengers and the driver were taken to Bicol Medical Center in Naga City.

Police identified the fatalities as Aileen Mirasol, Ramona Mirasol, Pedro Pelaez, Victoria delos Reyes, Shierwin Mendoza, Marvin Chavez, Erwin Mendoza, and a certain person called “Walastik.”

The truck was registered to the local government of San Fernando.
