DFA condemns twin bombings in Jolo, Sulu
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday condemned the two explosions that hit a Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo, leaving at least 20 people killed and more than a hundred injured.
The DFA said they grieve over the “unnecessary loss of so many lives,” adding that such an act of violence could only be perpetrated by “forces of evil.”
“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) joins the entire nation in condemning the terrorist bombing of the Cathedral of the Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo, Sulu on Sunday, 27 January 2019,” the DFA said in a statement.

The foreign affairs agency vowed to help find the perpetrators of the attack and “bring them to justice.”
The DFA also said that it is “thankful for the many expressions of sympathy and solidarity from the international community.”
Article continues after this advertisementIt also said that the terrorist attack comes at a “sensitive and yet hopeful period,” noting the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law.
Article continues after this advertisement“The Philippine Government remains steadfast, along with international partners and other stakeholders, in achieving lasting peace in the Bangsamoro, particularly in the Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi region,” the DFA said.
Last Sunday, two explosions hit the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo, Sulu while a mass was being celebrated.
Security officials have already placed the province under lockdown to ensure safety within the area and as investigators probe on the bombings.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana condemned the deadly bombings, adding that the “full force of the law” will be used to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

The Malacañang also earlier vowed to “pursue to the ends of the earth” the perpetrators of twin bombings.

The Islamic State (IS) group has earlier claimed responsibility for the double bomb attack, issuing a formal communique claiming two suicide bombers had detonated explosive belts inside the church and its car park on Jolo. /je
