The display says,“Thank You, Tatang,” referring to Sy, as he was fondly called by many.

A video was also posted in SM Supermalls’ official Twitter account as tribute to Sy’s legacy.

In 1946, Sy opened a small shoe store in Manila that eventually grew into a retail empire with 72 shopping malls that serves 3.5 million customers a day.

On January 19, Sy passed away “peacefully in his sleep” at 94 years old.
