MANILA, Philippines—Camp Crame has been declared a “no-firecracker zone,” as the Philippine National Police (PNP) joins the government’s campaign to bring down firecracker-related incidents during the holidays.

PNP Director General Nicanor A. Bartolome issued the order to ensure that no one would be allowed to set off firecrackers within the camp as well as in the periphery.

In a statement, he said the directive was “in support to the government’s Iwas Paputok’ campaign to bring down firecracker-related incidents which may result to the lost of limbs, lives and damage to properties.”

“There are many ways to celebrate the yuletide season away from the dangers brought about by firecracker incidents. We can celebrate it the traditional and safe way of blowing horns and use of ‘kalembang’ (bells),” Bartolome said.

He said making celebratory noises through blowing trumpets, shaking coins, or playing loud music would be just as effective in spreading holiday cheer.

The PNP chief said violators of the “no-firecracker zone” would face sanctions.

Bartolome also asked PNP units inside the camp to observe proper waste disposal during and after Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. “Let us join hands to make our Christmas and New Year safe by doing our share of not using any firecrackers,” he said.
