Traslacion 2019: Manila streets take another hit from litterbugs

MANILA, Philippines — Trash and more trash – that’s the dark side of this year’s Traslacion procession that concluded early Thursday.

Despite repeated pleading from an environmental group, many devotees of the Black Nazarene failed to get the message, scattering their garbages along the route of the procession.

Most of the items dumped by devotees were styrofoam containers, plastic bottles and paper cups.

The Metropolitan Development Authority Manila, however, has no word yet on how many garbage trucks were dispatched to collect trash left by Traslacion participants this year.

In a statement, EcoWaste Coalition said that their appeal to the public not to litter on the day of Traslacion fell on “deaf ears”

“Our public appeal for a trash-less Traslacion has again fallen on deaf ears. Many people unashamedly threw their garbage anywhere turning the parade ground fronting the Quirino Grandstand into a dumping ground,” the group said.
