MANILA, Philippines — Traffic on the northbound lane of Edsa was already at a standstill late Friday afternoon as Christmas rush is expected to reach its peak this weekend.

At only 4:00 p.m., vehicles going into Edsa from South Luzon Expressway can be seen already moving at a turtle’s pace from Magallanes MRT station.

The southbound lane of the same area, however, was not as congested with traffic still moderately moving, as of this posting.

The MMDA on Thursday warned the public of a “carmageddon” this weekend in anticipation of the public’s last minute preparations for Christmas next week.

“Yes, tama po ‘yun dahil last Friday na po ito nung holiday season, definitely nasa labas na po lahat ng tao diyan — yung mga huling hirit ng shopping, Christmas parties, etc,” MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said in an interview with dzMM when asked if the public should brace for a “carmaggedon” on Friday.
