Fire hits Sangley Point Naval Ordnance Depot in Cavite

Fire struck one of the facilities of the Philippine Navy’s Naval Ordnance Depot at the Naval Station Sangley Point in Cavite City, on Friday, the spokesperson of the Philippine Navy has confirmed.

Philippine Navy spokesperson  Commander Jonathan Zata said the fire struck one of the weapons storage units or “igloos” of the Naval Ordnance Depot at around 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. Zata said the igloo stored ammunition for small caliber guns.

“Approximately po, mga bandang kalagitnaan po ng alas singko alas singko y media, nareport po na mayroon nga pong sunog sa isa sa mga ‘igloos’ ng Naval Ordnance Depot,” Zata said over an interview at DZMM.

Zata said the fire was declared “contained” at 7:45 a.m. according to the incident commander of the Philippine Navy.

Zata said no Navy personnel were killed or injured in the fire.

According to Zata, the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined as firefighters are still trying to put it out.

“Kasalukuyan pa pong inaapula yung nagaganap na sunog kung kaya’t patuloy pa rin yung pag-iimbestiga kung ano po yung tunay na cause ng sunog,” he said.

He, however, assured that the fire will no longer spread as the storage units or “igloos” are designed to withstand explosions and fire.

“Ang igloos ay designed in such a way na pag nagkaroon ng explosion, kagaya ng ganito sunog, ay hindi po maaapektuhan itong mga katabing igloo at yung mga katabing straktura,” Zata said.  /muf
