Ten bus drivers and two conductors have tested positive for illegal drug use in the surprise and mandatory drug test conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement and Agency (PDEA).

PDEA has ordered 848 drivers and seven conductors in different terminals and ports to undergo drug test as part of its “Oplan Undaspot” to ensure public safety for the upcoming All Saints and All Souls’ Day.

The drivers and conductors who tested positive for drug use were not allowed to travel pending the confiscation of their licenses while undergoing rehabilitation process, PDEA said.

PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino said Tuesday that he ordered the drug test due to the increasing number of bus drivers and conductors being hooked on illegal drugs.

“This is our way of extending concern to the Filipino government as a government entity, while ensuring a safe and harmless travel,” he said in a statement.

PDEA is coordinating with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in ensuring the safety of passengers traveling to the provinces.

The LTO and the LTFRB have the authority to impose sanctions on erring drivers.

“The use of illegal drugs in the transportation industry is rampant even in ordinary hours, making the riding public prone to accidents,” Aquino said.

“These drivers should face the consequences of using illegal drugs so as not to compromise the safety of passengers,” he added.

Apart from the drug test, the PDEA also distributes to travelers materials that aim to raise their awareness to a safe and secure travel. /cbb
