Street sweeper beaten up by parents for stopping their son from defecating on roadside
A 66-year-old street sweeper in Henan province, China was beaten up and spat at by a couple after she stopped their child from defecating on the side of the road.
A video of the incident circulated on Chinese social media, as reported by Shanghai.ist on Thursday, Oct. 18. The couple apologized to victim Yao Xiang for what they did. They have also paid Yao’s medical bills.
Yao was cleaning a park on Thursday when she saw a child preparing to defecate on the roadside. The street sweeper went up to the boy to stop him from doing so.
Her action, however, spurned anger from the child’s parents who cursed her and physically assaulted her for touching their son. The video, which was first uploaded on Chinese video sharing and live streaming service Miaopai, showed the beating she experienced in the hands of the parents.
The boy’s father grabbed her hair to pull her up after the street sweeper fell to the ground. The boy’s mother meanwhile argued with a passerby trying to stop them from beating up Yao. The mother was also seen spitting in Yao’s direction.
The authorities came not long after the incident was reported by concerned citizens, the report said. The child’s parents were taken to the police station while the street sweeper was rushed to the nearest hospital. Yao received bumps and bruises from the ordeal.
“When you sweep the ground, people always look down on you,” Yao said in the report. Kate Matriano/JB
