A shallow 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s East Java and Bali provinces in the early hours of Thursday, Oct. 11, killing at least three people and injuring eight others on the island of Madura.
All the three people died in Sumenep district on Madura island after being crushed by collapsed buildings, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Managament Agency (BNPB). All of the injuries were also caused by collapsed buildings in Sumenep, he said.
“The earthquake happened early Thursday when they were sleeping and the quake suddenly rocked so they didn’t have time to evacuate,” Sutopo said.
People in the eastern part of Java, Madura and Bali islands also reported they felt the earthquake.
