Earthquake of magnitude 4.8 strikes Occidental Mindoro – Phivolcs

An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 hit Occidental Mindoro on Thursday, June 27, 2024, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). It also said the tectonic temblor struck at 9:53 a.m., with its epicenter detected west of Palauan town. INQUIRER FILES

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted Occidental Mindoro on Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The state seismologist said the tectonic temblor struck at 9:53 a.m., with its epicenter detected west of Palauan town.

Phivolcs also said that the quake registered a depth of focus of 10 kilometers (km).

Intensity II was felt in Tagaytay City, Cavite, while varying instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:

Instrumental Intensity III

  • Oriental Mindoro –  Puerto Galera
  • Occidental Mindoro – Mamburao

Instrumental Intensity II

  • Oriental Mindoro –  Calapan City
  • Occidental Mindoro – Abra de Ilog

Instrumental Intensity I

  • Occidental Mindoro – San Jose
  • Batangas – Calatagan

Phivolcs said the earthquake is not expected to cause damage or aftershocks.

Also on Thursday, a magnitude 4.0 temblor hit waters off Davao Oriental.

The quake occurred at 9:04 a.m., and its epicenter was located east of Baganga town. It had a depth of focus of 21 km. This earthquake is likewise not anticipated to result in damage to properties or aftershocks.
