MANILA, Philippines—The House of Representatives will need the consent of the Senate before it can increase its membership from 250 to 300 congressmen, according to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
“They will have to pass a law and every law passed by the House cannot become a law until it is also approved by the Senate,” Enrile said in an interview Sunday over radio station dwIZ.
The Senate President was reacting to statements made last week by House officials who said they could increase their membership with just the majority vote of the House and without the approval of the Senate.
“Subukan nila (Let them try). They can go ahead and do it and let’s see if it will happen,” Enrile said.
He said the House needed the Senate when it added congressional districts, “what more if it would change or increase the number of congressmen.” Christine O. Avendańo
