THE PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD (PCG) has contained the oil spill that took place at the Navotas Fish Port earlier this week, but has yet to pinpoint which barge or cargo vessel is responsible for the leak.
Port manager Tito Cosejo said Saturday that harbor personnel had reported the oil leak at the mouth of the fish port near the facility?s breakwater on Wednesday.
The wind, which was blowing inwards to the port, had pushed the oil leak further towards Pier 2.
The spillage amounted to only about 500 liters of oil?or about two drums?and was contained immediately by the PCG with absorbent materials, Cosejo added.
No damage had been reported by the port?s clients, he added.
Officials of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, which manages the operations of the Navotas Fish Port, are now coordinating with the (PCG) to find out whether the spillage was an accidental leak or was deliberately thrown into the waters.
Port officials, as well as the PCG, will also inspect vessels that call on the port to identify which of them may have caused the oil spill.
The Navotas Fish Port is one of the country?s major fish ports located at the northeastern section of the Manila Bay.
It serves as the traditional landing area of commercial fishing boats operating in various fishing grounds of the country.
