MANILA, Philippines? The national government has declared Feb. 13 a special nonworking day in Parañaque City which will be marking its 11th cityhood anniversary.

Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. said Proclamation 1714 issued by Malacañang was aimed at ?[giving] the people of Parañaque the full opportunity to celebrate the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.?

?Our city has seen and experienced great strides in its growth and development for the benefit of our residents. With their continued support and cooperation, we hope to do more for them and the city in the years ahead,? Bernabe said in a statement.

As a result of Malacañang?s declaration, there will be no classes in all schools in Parañaque.

The city government has lined up several activities for the celebration, including a flag ceremony to be led by Bernabe at 7 a.m. on Feb. 12.

This will be followed by a thanksgiving Mass at the Parañaque City Hall to be celebrated by Msgr. Manny Gabriel, rector of St. Andrew Cathedral, Diocese of Parañaque.

Afterward, City Hall employees and their guests will be treated to a food festival and a cultural program.

Bernabe, meanwhile, encouraged residents to watch the parade of floats and a free concert featuring Rivermaya and South Border that will cap the celebration at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 11, the city government will recognize the top 10 corporate and five individual taxpayers at 6 p.m. in the Platinum Hall of Pagcor-Parañaque.

There are no activities scheduled on Feb. 13 to allow Parañaque residents to rest after the celebration, Bernabe said.
