SYDNEY, Australia -- A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck off the Solomon Islands on Saturday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami alert was not issued.
The undersea quake struck at 08:27 p.m. (0927 GMT) 287 kilometers (178 miles) east of Kira Kira, which is located on San Cristobal island, and 527 kilometers east of the capital Honiara, the United States Geological Survey said.
It occurred at a depth of 38 kilometers, the organization said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert for the region.
An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
