MANILA, Philippines—Some 40 suspected members of the New People’s Army took a government vehicle and raided a police station in Divilacan town, Isabela province Sunday, carting several firearms and equipment in the process, police said on Monday.
The rebels, which included two women, first flagged down an Isuzu six-wheeler dump truck (SFA 323) owned by the local government of Maconacon town Sunday morning, according to a report from Isabela police.
The vehicle left Maconacon at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and was bound for Divilacan to pick up several solar-powered panels and equipment intended for several villages in Maconacon. Upon reaching Dicatian village, Divilacan town, however, the vehicle and its 16 passengers were flagged down by the suspects.
The rebels then ordered all the vehicle’s passengers—all government employees—to disembark and were subsequently brought into the forest where they were left by the suspects, police said.
After which, the suspects then used the truck and headed to the nearby police station in Divilacan. The suspects first fired at the police station, catching duty policemen by surprise.
Police said two of the duty policemen were caught by surprise and were ordered by the rebels to lie on the ground while their weapons were taken from them.
An inventory of missing items revealed that the rebels took several firearms from the police station, including two M16 rifles, a caliber 45 pistol, one fragmentation hand grenade, and one rifle grenade.
Police said the suspects also took seven police uniforms, a typewriter, and a radio before fleeing toward an undetermined location.
