MANILA, Philippines — Police are hunting down three suspects responsible for kidnapping the wife and daughter of a businessman in Camarines Norte province last Friday, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
Inspector Ayn Natuel of Bicol region police said police have set up checkpoints in major intersections in Daet town where Michelle Umali and her three-year-old daughter were abducted by armed men last July 17.
Local police have also coordinated with nearby police stations and alerted authorities where the suspects reportedly fled with the victims.
A report from Bicol police revealed that the Umalis were having a picnic at Bagasbas Beach when the suspects, led by a certain Diego Saad, arrived and shot at Renato Umali but missed.
The Umalis’ escort, Gil Innocencio, fired back at the suspects, prompting the latter to grab the two victims as hostages.
Michelle and her daughter were then forcibly dragged into a Mitsubishi Adventure used by the suspects, and the suspects then fled toward Awitan village in Daet and believed to be headed for Metro Manila, police said.
Natuel said no reports of any ransom demand have been made as of this time, but Renato has reportedly identified the suspect.
Charges of attempted murder and kidnapping with serious illegal detention are being readied against the suspects, she said.
