TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – Tropical storm “Feria” spawned a tornado and stirred big waves in the Eastern Visayas region, leaving six people wounded and five others missing, officials said Wednesday.
The tornado struck the villages of Rawis, Carolina, and Malago in Can-avid town at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, wounding six people and damaging 26 houses that were made of light materials, town Mayor Norman Germino said in a phone interview.
Strong winds damaged the roofs of four classrooms in the Can-avid Central School, three classrooms in Can-avid National High School, and four classrooms at the Eastern Samar State University Can-avid, Germino said.
Five fishermen were reported missing by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) regional office – two from Hernani town and two others from Guiuan town in Eastern Samar province, and one from Malitbog town, Leyte province.
Two other fishermen were rescued from rough waters off Bantigue village in Isabel town, Leyte. They were identified as Wilmo Cantilan of Bogo City, Cebu province and Justino Munda of Malitbog town.
Cantilan was rescued at around 8 a.m. Wednesday, while Munda was rescued two hours later, Rene Moshe Amano of the OCD said.
Over 1,000 passengers bound for Luzon and Metro Manila were stranded at the two ports in Northern Samar -- 768 at Look port in Allen town and 260 at the Dapdap port in San Isidro town.
