MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) An active low pressure area west of Southern Luzon has intensified into a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Wednesday afternoon. Tropical depression “Siony” was 320 kilometers 310 kilometers northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan packing maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. weather bulletin. Siony is forecast to move southwest at 15 kilometers per hour, PAGASA said. No storm warning signals have been raised. However, Siony is expected to bring rains over Palawan that may trigger flashfloods and landslides, PAGASA said. Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms, becoming widespread rains over the provinces of Mindoro and Palawan, PAGASA said. Metro Manila will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms while the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to, at times, cloudy skies with isolated rain showers, the weather bureau said. Siony is expected to be 530 kilometers west of Puerto Princesa City by Thursday afternoon, PAGASA said.
